Syria's Central Bank Confirms Sovereignty of New National Currency

The Central Bank of Syria has confirmed that the new lira is the sole symbol of national monetary sovereignty. The bank is coordinating with relevant authorities to regulate the monetary environment to serve market stability and the interests of citizens across all Syrian provinces. Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdelqader al-Jasri, stated in an interview with the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) published on Monday, that the laws and executive decisions that define the rules and mechanisms for regulating the circulation of other currencies, including the Turkish lira, are different from the replacement process, which is confined to replacing the old currency with a new one. Jasri clarified that the currency replacement process is part of well-studied measures to ensure smoothness and avoid placing any additional burdens on citizens, stressing that it is not linked to foreign currency or the dollar, does not aim to regulate or restrict it, and does not affect market movement or foreign exchange reserves. Jasri confirmed that at this stage, the replacement process does not target the Turkish lira, and that the withdrawal of the Turkish lira began separately from the replacement process and is ongoing. Any future regulatory measures will be clear and announced transparently, with Jasri reaffirming his commitment to communication and transparency. Yesterday, the Minister of Economy and Industry, Nidal al-Shaar, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdelqader al-Jasri, conducted a field tour of several currency exchange centers in Damascus to follow up on currency exchange mechanisms and adherence to instructions and regulations.
