Man Attacks Taxi Passenger with Knife in Tartus

A horrific incident in the Syrian city of Tartus has sparked widespread public outrage and gone viral on social media under the hashtag #كلنا_العم_حسين. The suspect, Ahmad Bashir, born in Tartus in 1963, attacked Hussein Salama, who is over 60 years old, with a sharp knife to the neck while they were in a taxi. Bashir attempted to murder Salama without provocation or asking any questions. Bystanders who witnessed the crime intervened in time, stopping Bashir and handing him over to the authorities. An ambulance team from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in Tartus arrived at the scene, provided first aid to the victim, and transported him to the National Hospital. According to the hospital's director, Dr. Husam Hassan, Hussein Salama's condition is now excellent and stable, whereas the assailant was never admitted to the hospital. Law enforcement authorities have arrested the suspect, and an investigation into the incident is underway. Official sources and medical reports indicate that the assailant suffers from a chronic mental illness, schizophrenia. He is currently experiencing an acute episode, which has led to dangerous and socially unacceptable behavior. Doctors note that the man does not adhere to his prescribed treatment and refuses to take his medication, making him a danger to himself and others. He therefore requires ongoing monitoring. The Tartus Health Directorate and the provincial governorate have called on the public to be cautious and refrain from spreading rumors that could harm social cohesion. On its official Facebook page, the governorate published witness accounts, refuting rumors that sought to incite sectarian tensions. The victim's son, Dr. Muhammad Salama, confirmed that his father, after being discharged from intensive care, insisted that the assailant had not asked him any questions before the attack.
