France Supports Gradual Lifting of Sanctions on Syria

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, invited the interim President of Syria, Ahmed al-Shara, to consider all possible measures "to ensure the protection of all Syrians without exception," during a meeting in Paris on Wednesday, as part of his first visit to the western state. Macron insisted on the necessity of "following up and holding accountable those responsible for sectarian crimes against friends in recent times, as well as perpetrators who committed 'rezni' against Alawites in March, calling on the European Union to 'swiftly impose sanctions on these perpetrators.'"

In turn, the interim president Ahmed al-Shara at a press conference with the President of France stated that the continuation of Europe's economic sanctions against Damascus no longer has "justification" after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. "These sanctions were imposed on the previous regime due to the crimes it committed, and this regime has fallen, and along with it, the sanctions should go," Shara emphasized.

According to Macron, he will insist on lifting European Union sanctions towards Syria gradually, if the current authorities can ensure stability in the country. Macron added that he would convey this message to the United States, so they would follow his example in this regard. "I informed the president that if he continues on his path, we will do the same," added Macron.
