European Union calls for cessation of hostilities in Syria

The European Union called on both parties to «ensure the security of camps and detention centers and work to prevent the return of the ISIS terrorist organization». The official representative of the EU's diplomatic mechanism, Anwar Al-Anouni, stated that «a complete cessation of hostilities is necessary to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid, protect civilians, and facilitate the return of internally displaced persons». The European Union welcomed the agreement reached between the Syrian government and the Kurdish administration, calling for its implementation «in good faith and with consensus». The two sides reached the agreement amid a ceasefire between their forces that began on January 20, following weeks of tension and clashes during which the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces («SDF») lost control.
