Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has successfully established relations with Western governments and made several trips abroad, including to the United States, France, and Russia. Over the past year, many international sanctions were lifted from Syria to help kickstart its reconstruction after a devastating 14-year conflict. Sharaa, who is making his first visit to Germany since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in 2024, is expected to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. On Monday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is holding meetings with German officials in his first visit to the country to discuss the Middle East war, the reconstruction of his nation, and Berlin's efforts to repatriate Syrian refugees.
