Almost 200,000 Syrian refugees returned to their homeland since December of last year. This was stated by the Senior Commissioner of the UN for Refugees Filippo Grandi on Sunday. Volunteers launched a campaign called "Return to Sham" for the restoration of life on the streets of Damascus.

According to the published data, Grandi stated on social media, about 195,200 Syrians returned home as of January 16, following the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024. He also announced plans to visit Syria and neighboring countries to strengthen support for the Senior Commissioner of the UN for Refugees for the return of refugees and communities of origin, although the exact timing of the visit has not yet been determined.
