UN Security Council delegation makes historic visit to Syria

Damascus, December 5 — A United Nations Security Council delegation visited Syria today in a visit described as unusual and historic.

This encounter marks the first high-level interaction with Syrian authorities since Ahmad al-Sharaa took power in December 2024, following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad.

The delegation, representing all member states of the Council, met in Damascus with Syrian leader Al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, and other high-ranking government officials.

At the end of the day, the President of the Security Council for December and Slovenia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Samuel Zbogar, stated that the mission's primary objective was to "build trust" and expressed his hope that the visit would mark a step forward in this effort.

Zbogar detailed that the delegation addressed a broad and complex agenda with the Syrian authorities, including:

  • Justice, reconciliation, and inclusivity in the political process.
  • National dialogue and political transition.
  • Humanitarian needs, economic development, and reconstruction.
  • Efforts to combat terrorism and prevent Syria from becoming a threat to other countries.

"We agree with the president on the importance of Syria's economic development and reconstruction," Zbogar added.

The delegation also met with UN representatives in Syria and with communities affected by violence in the Sweida province and recent coastal incidents.

The visit comes as Syria intensifies its efforts to stabilize the political situation and advance the national dialogue.

"We agree with the president on the importance of Syria's economic development and reconstruction," Zbogar added.
