Dubai-based global port operator DP World has commenced operations at the port of Tartous following the official handover from Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Ports. The company welcomed the new port locomotive, named 'Fateh', into service. This step marks a key milestone within the framework of DP World's 30-year concession agreement for Tartous port, which includes planned investments of up to 3 billion UAE dirhams (800 million USD), representing one of the largest foreign investments in the Syrian logistics sector in recent years. This initial phase includes technical surveys, operational studies, and design planning to create a detailed roadmap for redevelopment. In the short term, the focus will be on deepening sea access channels, basins, and quays to achieve optimal design depths. The rehabilitation and replacement of existing handling equipment, along with the introduction of new specialized assets, will enable the port to meet the growing demand for bulk and general cargo. DP World will also deploy its advanced digital platforms to enhance operational efficiency and transparency. The concession agreement is designed to support Syria's economic recovery and transform Tartous into a highly efficient commercial and logistics hub. Fahd Banna, CEO of DP World Tartous, stated: 'We have embarked on a journey to transform Tartous port into a world-class seaport.' Comprehensive safety audits and specialized training programs are currently being implemented. In the medium term, the redevelopment program will involve upgrading the port's infrastructure and superstructure, expanding handling and storage capacities, investing in advanced bulk cargo handling systems, and building new container and bulk cargo facilities. Employee training programs and process improvements will be implemented in parallel to boost productivity and reduce vessel waiting times to meet global standards. The group stated it is currently conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the port's infrastructure, including equipment, quay readiness, and yard and warehouse facilities. Within this framework, DP World is prioritizing the application of the highest safety standards across all port operations. Through close collaboration with the Syrian government and the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, we are committed to leveraging DP World's global expertise to build a modern, digitally advanced port that boosts trade, creates opportunities, and cements Tartous' status as a major commercial hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.
