The authorities of the new provisional government of Ahmed al Sharaa are facing the first serious incident with the recent clashes in Syria. Al Sharaa has announced the formation of an independent committee to investigate the violations against civilians that occurred during the recent events and to determine who is responsible for the crimes. This committee is made up of five judges, a brigadier general, and a lawyer, according to a statement from the Syrian Presidency signed by Al Sharaa, which names the members of the committee.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has received information about extrajudicial executions with sectarian connotations carried out by individuals associated with the previous government, current security forces, and unidentified persons. In this regard, he urged the interim authorities to take swift action to protect Syrian citizens and ensure accountability for any violation or abuse.
In a meeting requested by several member states, the UN Security Council will meet urgently to address the massacre that took place in western Syria and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, with a toll of 1,311 dead, including 830 civilians, in the worst wave of violence in years in the country, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The closed-door meeting will likely be attended by the special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.
