Israeli forces carried out airstrikes on residential buildings in the Syrian capital, Damascus, and its surroundings this Thursday, resulting in the death of at least 15 people and injuring 16, according to the Ministry of Defense and state television of Syria.
The ministry indicated that around 3:20 PM local time (12:20 GMT), the Israeli army launched an airstrike from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights, targeting several residential buildings in the Mazzeh neighborhood, in western Damascus, and the suburb of Qudsaya, in the northwest of the capital.
The airstrikes caused the death of 15 people and injuries to another 16, including women and children, in addition to causing significant damage to private property and civilian buildings.
State television reported Israeli airstrikes against three buildings in Mazzeh and another against a building belonging to an educational complex in a residential area of Qudsaya. Following the attacks, loud explosions were heard throughout the city, and thick plumes of smoke rose from the impacted sites. Ambulances and emergency services rushed to the scene to assist the victims.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that residential buildings in Mazzeh and Qudsaya were bombed.
The Israeli army later reported that its warplanes bombed command centers and infrastructure facilities belonging to the Islamic Jihad militant group, claiming that this group participated in an attack led by Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 people died and another 250 were kidnapped. Israel stated that it will continue to act against Islamic Jihad "wherever necessary."
